This year’s slate of winners are not the ones that I would’ve picked, but it’s a good group of books overall, and part of an excellent crop of stories that came out last year. There's always something that crops up during awards season, and this year is no exception. Librarian and writer Alex Brown [pointed out](https://bsky.app/profile/bookjockeyalex.bsky.social/post/3kvm3runqxk2y?ref=andrewliptak.com) that with Neil Clarke's win in the editor category, he's only the fourth author to have earned the award, with Ellen Datlow and Gardner Dozois [each tallied 17 wins apiece](https://www.sfadb.com/Locus%5FAwards%5FWinners%5FBy%5FCategory?ref=andrewliptak.com) in the category since it began in 1989\. David Hartwell earned the award in 2016, posthumously. Hilariously, Tor has earned the award continuously since 1988. I've gotten out of the habit of thinking of these sorts of fan-driven awards as being anything more than a barometer for the tastes that SF fandom holds. At the end of the day, these are club awards: recognition from a group of people largely to the same group of people, and any minor thing that crops up bubbles up into a frenzy on social media before the next issue comes along. That's not to say that the criticism isn't valid: those are some pretty eye-opening streaks, and I think it says more about the folks voting than the ones on the ballots. It's another anecdote that fandom has some ingrained habits and preferences, and if you want to move the needle, you need to expand the pool of people who typically vote in the awards. You need to champion worthy authors and editors, encourage your followings, subscribers, or readership to take an active role in voting in the awards, and generally make it known that this sort of peer recognition is important. The challenge, as I see it, is apathy: do most readers care enough to take the time out of their day to vote for what publisher they feel did the goodest job in the past year? Probably not.
